KOHLER* GRAND PRIX
June 21 - 24, 2018
GENERAL INFO – The Road America Track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin is one of the oldest active permanent road racing facilities and certainly an iconic stop for the IndyCar Series. The track was officially opened in September of 1955 and remains virtually unchanged from the original concept. The track is located in middle Eastern Wisconsin, close to Lake Michigan, North of Milwaukee, close to Sheboygan, Plymouth and Fond du Lac. It is a beautiful scenic area. The IndyCar event weekend will share the track with the Pirelli World Challenge Series, Mazda Road to Indy and the USF 2000, making it an action packed, racing variety weekend.
Road America hosts 425 events annually, with many events happening simultaneously. This includes many professional and amateur events, club activities and individual ‘TrackDays’ one of which will be held on June 25. For a fee, you can drive your own car on the track and learn to be a better driver. Check the website for more information at roadamerica.com. This race track is big business, attracting about 800,000 visitors annually! The track even has a zipline!!
The track is in a rural community, with about 1,000 permanent residents. You will experience traffic issues, as the roads usually accommodate local traffic. Be patient and follow signs and you’ll arrive to an outstanding road course. Camping on the grounds is allowed and somewhat recommended. If you are not camping, possibly seek lodging in Sheboygan, Plymouth or Fond du Lac. Cell phone service is sketchy and the track provides no charging stations.
The facility contains grass, gravel, pavement, trails and hills. Comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing is suggested. Weather can be hot, cold, moderate, windy, wet and/or humid. Pack your allergy meds. Watch your weather forecast and proceed accordingly. Travel as light as you can, but no reserved grandstands. Might want to bring a chair or blanket. Coolers are allowed, no glass containers. No private golf carts are allowed, but they are available for rent with an advance purchase. Contact track at 1-800-365-7223.
