An enthusiastic crowd of more than 100 hospitalized children and their families took part in the Racing For Kids visit to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines featuring IZOD INDYCAR racing star Ana “Bia” Beatriz.
“This was probably the best visit yet,” said Blank Hospital’s Erin Wendt. “Everything worked out perfectly and the kids just loved Bia and were so excited about the car.”
Four-year-old Isaiah was delighted to sit in an authentic INDYCAR. “I’ve seen Sprint cars before in Knoxville (Iowa) but I never saw a car like this!” he exclaimed.
Some favorite questions from the kids were: “ Is this a REAL car?” and “How do I turn it on?” Bia explained that yes, it is a real car, but no – the motor is missing so they can’t turn it on!
Fortunately most of the children at Blank Children’s were able to get out of bed and come outside to see Bia and the showcar. For the others in isolation, Bia made special bedside visits to cheer them up. All the children received the bright Racing For Kids caps as well as coloring books and Bia’s autographed hero cards.
“We are so appreciative of Racing For Kids coming to Blank every year,” said Ms. Wendt, “it was a fantastic visit.”
